EISA is a not-for-profit organisation promoting credible elections and sustainable democracies in Africa.

Headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa and Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and supported by field offices across the continent.
EISA was established to support democratic transition, initially with a focus on contributing to a free and fair elections in post-Apartheid South Africa.
EISA’s early work involved conflict monitoring, mediation, and mitigation strategies around elections. These early experiences have been beneficial in allowing EISA to continue this work in many other post-conflict and transitional spaces.EISA’s programmatic scope has adapted to activities beyond elections to areas of the democratic and good governance support in Africa.

The organisation’s programmatic approach is focused on two broad areas of work, namely elections and good governance.
Elections in Africa
The Elections and Political Processes (EPP) programme at EISA focuses on supporting regional, sub-regional and national stakeholders to foster inclusive, peaceful, and credible elections.
In this regard, EISA provides support to inter-governmental bodies, civil society and electoral commissions through election assessment and electoral assistance initiatives.
Elections in Africa

Partnerships










At sub-regional and regional levels, the Institute has built strong and effective partnerships with key Pan-African bodies, namely the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Pan African Parliament (PAP) as well as Regional Economic Communities, such as EAC, ECCAS, ECOWAS, ICGLR and SADC.
The strategic choice to provide technical assistance to these organisations has strengthened their capacity to assess elections as well as supporting a sustainable democratic development in Africa. EISA has played a key role in many initiatives to establish electoral standards and establish benchmarks in Africa.
EISA works with different national electoral stakeholders such as Electoral Management Bodies, civil society organisations, national parliaments or assemblies and political parties.

Project Management
Our Approach
EISA is committed to sustainability in its approach to project implementation with local partners. Strengthening local capacity is central to ensuring that project results endure after projects end.
EISA project management expertise extends across concept and design, procurement and stakeholder and partner engagement, human resources, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and detailed reporting.

EISA Field Office Teams
