Mauritius: 1976 Legislative Assembly election results

The election took place on 23 December 1976.
Up to eight seats, in addition to those contested in the multimember constituency contests, are allocated to "best losers" by the Electoral Supervisory Commission "[i]n order to ensure a fair and adequate representation of each community", in terms of Section 38 of the Constitution of 1968. In 1976 all eight best loser seats were allocated, four to the MMM, three to the IP and one to PMSD.
According to Lodge et al (2002, 166) voting statistics were:
Registered voters: 460 100
Votes cast: 404 918
Turnout: 88%
Electoral Aliances and parties
The Independence Party (IP) was an alliance of Labour Party and the Muslim Action Committee.
